DON MURPHY
Brings Honor to North Burlingame Don Murphy Mr. Don Murphy one of our North Burlingame Neighbors was honored last week by being elected Vice President of the California Newspaper Advertising Managers Association at a meeting held at the Press Club in San Francisco. He was also again appointed convention chairman after having been chairman last year and arranging for the meeting in Santa Barbara. Mr. Murphy is advertising manager of the San Mateo Times and has been for two years. Before that he was advertising manager of the Vallejo Evening Chronicle. The San Mateo Times is a fine paper and must be very glad they have Mr. Murphy on their staff. Mr. Murphy showed the editor of this paper over the San Mateo Times one day and they certainly have a fine plant. More people ought to go and see how their newspaper is run. They would be surprices and proud. We are very proud to have Mr. Murphy for a Neighbor and subscriber. He lives at 2112 Easton Dr.

The Growth and History
Of Burlingame High School Burlingame High School was opened in the fall semester of 1923. There was a fairly large enrollment of 350 students, all of them ready and eager to begin in their wonderful new school in the various types of lessons. Now the enrollment of the school is 494 boys and 474 girls, making a total of 968 pupils which is about the capacity of the school. Originally Burlin-game High School was known only as High School and not until 1927 was it called Burlingame High School. Before 1927 it was united with the San Mateo High School. For instance there was only one band between the schools and the members consisted of the pupils of both schools, and the same with the football teams and etc. Several years after Burlingame’s opening some beautiful shrubs, trees, and pretty flowers were set in the school’s front terrace. This act increased the beauty and splendor of the school. As the pupils increased, more teachers were needed. There are now 47 teachers not including the shop teachers at San Mateo. These teachers include Art, English, Algebra, Geometry, French, German, Latin, Spanish, U.S. History and etc. |
Burlingame has installed a new system this year. It is the hour periods. In this way it gives each pupil a chance to study and do their home work in the classroom. The pupils of Burlingame High School are very sorry that the principal Mr. Marsh is very ill with a nervous breakdown. Miss Northrup, assistant principal, who was so kind as to give me the data for this story is now acting as principal. For the past years Burlingame’s athletic teams have been a constant fear to all the other school teams; but this year and last year the teams produced by our two instructive coaches, Coach Lee Lancaster and Coach Lee Bisset, have surpassed all. On the Pictorial section you will see some of the wonderful pictures taken of our latest teams. The pictures taken of or about Burlingame High School, were taken by Mr. David Ohlsona, a member of the Science Department of Burlingame High School. BILL EDMUND
